Why is my server lagging?

“Lag” usually means one of two very different things, and the fix depends on which:

  • The whole server is slow for everyone (blocks break late, mobs stutter, saves hitch). That’s the server struggling — keep reading.
  • Only you feel delay, others are fine. That’s your connection or distance to the server, not the server itself. Jump to It’s only me.

Open your server at panel.qubesquad.com. At the top are three meters — CPU, Memory and Disk. They turn amber as they get busy and red when they’re nearly maxed.

What you seeWhat it meansFix
Memory pinned near the topNot enough RAM for your game/modpack/playersAdd the Performance Boost (+4 GB RAM)
CPU constantly redToo much happening each tick — mods, plugins, entities, playersBoost adds CPU too; also trim the load (below)
Disk near fullThe server can struggle to saveDelete old files/backups, or Boost adds +50 GB

Also glance at the Console tab — messages like “Plugin X exceeded its time budget” point straight at a culprit.

If Memory or CPU is regularly amber/red, the quickest win is the Performance Boost — +4 GB RAM and more CPU, added in one click. It’s the right fix for heavy modpacks, big communities, and demanding games.

  • Minecraft: lower view-distance and simulation-distance in the Config tab (server.properties). Going from 12 to 8 makes a big difference. Fewer loaded chunks = less work every tick.
  • Too many entities — mob farms, dropped items and huge automated builds all cost performance. Clear or cap them.
  • Heavy plugins/mods — remove the one the console keeps warning about, or swap it for a lighter alternative. See Add plugins.
  • Restart occasionally. A fresh restart clears memory that’s built up over days of uptime.
  • Schedule backups for quiet hours so a backup isn’t running while everyone’s on.
  • Keep some disk free — clear out old worlds and downloaded backups from the Files tab.

If the server’s stats look healthy and only some players feel delay, it’s distance or connection:

  • Play closer to the server. Players far from your server’s region will always have a higher ping. Your server runs in one location (Frankfurt, London, New York, Los Angeles or Singapore). If most of your group is elsewhere, you can reinstall in a closer region — it keeps your plan.
  • Wired beats Wi-Fi. A wired connection for the host and heavy players cuts spikes.
  • Check your own network before blaming the server — a quick speed test rules it out.

Open your server and click Get help to start a support ticket. It arrives with your server’s game, plan, region and current stats attached, so we can dig in without a back-and-forth.
